I just bought a new f-250d sc 5.4 auto its a 2003 w1300 on the clock. I use it as a daily driver to and from work. The round trip is 26mi. All highway. I very rarely exceed 65 mph. My propblem is that i'm only getting 10 mpg. I've checked it twice now and the same numbers come up. It has 3.73 ls axle I have not yet engaged the manual hubs or 4wd sys. This is with an empty load. Has the factory got an updated software for this truck? Something is not right here and I could really use some member knowledge about this. Thanks for taking the time to read and respond to this post, Paul Meschwitz.
Paul,
First congrats on the new SD. It will take it a few more miles to get the engine broken in but don't get your hopes up. I average 12.5 mpg all highway and always empty. Mine was the same way when I bought it 15 months ago. Do a search and you'll find lots of SD 5.4 owners with similiar numbers.

Congrats on the new SD as well. Just as Autobahn mentioned give it at least another 1,000 miles before tracking mileage to allow it to break in. That being said you more than likley aren't going to see anything more than 15MPG's

15 MPG on a 4x4 SC LB? Hmm... I reached that once. I was driving "big rig style" (accellerating on the downhills to gain momentum while dropping speed on uphills) at an average speed of about 60-65 for 120 highway miles, hardly ever touching the brakes. On the final long downhill stretch, my overhead display (which has been rather accurate for me) showed 15. It disappeared when the hill ended. I've never seen it since.
As far as 10 MPG goes, that is low. I don't think mine was that bad on break-in, but I would still say to wait 'till you've got 3-5K on the clock before you worry. Also, remember to break your truck in well by varying RPM's -- don't just get on the highway & set your cruise control. Around town driving is actually a good thing for breaking in a truck properly.
