Today on my way to work 150 km away i had some problems with my truck, while cruising along at 120km it died on me. I thought maybe it was the gas since my fuel guage has been recently acting up on me, but when i filled it to the brim the problem kept coming up. Everytime i would accelerate, drive fast or go up hill the engine would die on my, almost like it was out of fuel. Needless to say i thankfully nursed it to work and home, even if it took two hours longer then usual. I'm trying to decide where to start looking for problems, the fuel filter is less then a week old so thats not it. I have thought it might be the carberator or fuel pump, are then any other easier things that it could be?
Fuel Pump is the Most LIKEy suspect, What kind of engine? year? But even tho you changed the fuel filter, it could get almost stopped up...limiting your mode of traveling fast. I would most like check the fuel filter again, blow thu it if its a inline kind, IF it takes a effort to blow through it, change it then get some more filters... or drain the tank. If its a mechanical Fuel pump, no pressurize fuel line, insert a clear inline fuel filter to see what goes on with the fuel system. You want to ALWAYS see fuel in that filter, even before you use it in the morning, even after 5 min of running it. If its low or empty, you have a stoppage or a soon to be expect fuel delivery problem.
The engine is a 302, 5.0 Litre and its in a 1980 F-100. I took it into the mechanic to get looked over, he said there was a vacuum hose loose on the carberator and thought it could use some new plugs, and hoses, so i put those on later in the day. Its still doing the same thing though, so i'm considering putting in a new carb tommoro, since the one i got now has been giving me some problems before all this occured. Any thoughts on this subject?
oh yeah, i checked the filter and it was fine too, no problem blowing air thought it.
I switched tanks and it drives fine, so what does this mean?
I figure that either the problem is inside the tank or somewhere on the fuel line before the fuel pump. Any idea's?
You may be able to disconnect the line to that tank, remove the gas cap and blow out the line with compressed air. It seems likely that the "sock" on the fuel pickup may be falling apart.
