it is designed to shut off after a few minutes instead of just sitting there all day burning fuel.
Oh, good grief. What if I need to sit there for an extended period and want to run the AC?
My apologies to the OP. I thought that there was no way that his claim of auto-shutoff was accurate.
I assume (?) that this "feature" can be turned off? Assuming so, I hope it can switched to default-OFF and not require a new push of a button for every trip.
No it's definitely not a federal mandate on any vehicle above 8500GVW so let's clear that up. This isn't auto start and stop, this is a factory option for fleets to shutdown trucks to prevent idling in idle restricted states and jurisdictions.
F550 AUTO ENGINE OFF.. How can i stop my diesel engine from shutting off , by itself???
Your truck was optioned with engine idle shutdown. Unfortunately this is in the PCM so forscan can't do anything. You can turn this setting off with IDS. However this is also defeated with SEIC and if you are going to idle for long periods a high idle switch is pretty much mandatory and it also prevents the idle shutoff from taking over.
Every time I turn off my truck, it dings repeatedly and gives me a great big message to check the back seats for occupants. I guess that is to prevent the leaving the kid in a hot car thing.
WELL:
I was at a boat ramp parking lot recently (110 degrees out side). Someone was having trouble with their trailer.
I left my dog and 14 year old son in the truck with the air running while I went over to help. I thought about bringing my son to help me, but out of an abundance of caution decided it was better to leave him with the beloved pooch. I could not bring the pooch because there was no shade, and the pavement was way too hot for his feet. Had it been a medical emergency, I probably would have brought my son.
Came back to learn my son had to re-start the truck as it turned off by itself. While the truck was within my sight, there was too much ambient noise to hear it turn off, or him re-start it.
If Ford wants to give me safety warnings, that should be the first.
