A few weeks ago, my truck's thermostat quit working. In South Florida, the weather is constantly hot/sucks. Alot of people I know take the workings of the thermostat out and just replace the outer ring back into the housing. I have done this on a few of my own cars and it works great. However, this time I screwed up and forgot to put the 'ring' back in. Of course when I realized this I was already done putting my tools away.
The truck definitley does not get hot now! In fact, if I just drive around normally the needle does'nt even get beyond the "N" on the guage (daytime). It hardly even gets that far at night! When drive more aggressivley, or maintain 75+mph on the highway it comes up to just below the middle of the guage. This is where it always used to stay. As soon as I slow down it gets back down to the "N" again.
Should I go through the trouble of putting some resriction back in the T-STAT housing or will it be OK how it is?
Just to add some info...after I get back from a drive, I pop the hood and despite the cold reading, everything seems to be pretty warm (normal).
I would put the restrictor back in. The water can circulate too much and not cool the engine properly. Meaning the block would still get hot as normal, possibly hotter, and wouldn't transfer that heat to the water, so you wouldn't know how hot the engine really is.
I agree with the last post, If you do not use the thermostat, the antifreeze could circulate trough the radiator too fast and not cool. You will also not warn the engine to the correct operating temp when you first start it.
Yeah, I guess I'll be puttin' it back in soon. Can't wait to remove that great silicone and gasket I applied. Guess next time I'll burn one AFTER I finish the job!
