OEM LED conversion

Hi all, I have a 2016 Limited with LED headlights and the LH side stopped working completely.

The OEM LED assembly is around $1,000 new. I found one at LKQ for $925 shipped. Crazy! So my question is, can they be converted to halogen with a wiring harness? Anyone ever heard of something like this?

Welcome to FTE El Kevin,

Nope, no way to covert the LED housing to halogen. You can buy same aftermarket Morimotos for around $800-$1500 a set depending on the model. It would probably be cheaper and easier to get some OEM halogen housings and put some LED bulbs in them. Your OEM LED harness probably wouldn't work though, so some kind of adapter harness would be needed.

Contact a company like F150LEDs or Headlight Revolution and get their advice.

Why would you want to go to halogen lights? Only time I see these fail is from either moisture or a bad LED driver module.

The OEM LED headlight assembly is not serviceable. That’s the big flaw with it. If you have a headlight issue it’s about $1k per side to fix a “burnt out” headlight.

Take the plunge and purchase a new or used assembly and move on.

Before you do that, make sure the ballast itself isn’t the problem.

This part is replaceable and it would save you a nice chunk of change over a new or used assembly.

Simple. The ridiculous prices on LED. I would also want to go to Halogen. They also would need replacement if cracked for whatever reason.

These prices are the norm across all brands and models that come from the factory with LED headlights.

Everyone wants LED headlights from the factory but most complain about the cost of a replacement assembly.

Not everyone. I have no problems with the factory halogens now that they are adjusted properly. Almost 6 full years and 110K miles and I have yet to replace a single bulb on this truck. Granted when the time comes, I will be looking at the LED replacements that are available. But I wouldn't look at a 502A Lariat and up just for the LED headlights.

It’s hard to believe that Ford did not make the lighting elements serviceable in the LED headlights. I believe the 2021 XLTs and base Lariats that have LED reflector headlights have a serviceable lighting element.

+1

When we were putting together the list of wants for our 2015, I at first thought I wanted the LED headlights. However, when I learned they were not serviceable and the price to replace, I scratched that as a want.
