Column Shift Bushing Issues
So the bushings on our 69 are really worn out (3 speed column). I ordered replacement parts but I'm having a hell of a time getting them back on. The instructions say to put the washer on and then beat the bushing shaft outward with a conical punch. However, how the heck can you do that while it is in the truck?? I'm holding it in place with my hand - there's no way I can hold it enough to get a good enough blow to get it. Tonight I tried using a tapered socket and c-clamp and its started it but not enough bend-over to hold the washer in place.

While I have never installed these, I would try taking the metal sleeve out of the rubber bushing. install the rubber bushing in the shift lever. Then use a C clamp to press the sleeve back in the rubber.

Good morning - with the rubber in place, you can slide the bush in no problem. The issue is you have to put a washer on the one side (with no brass collar) and then hammer the bushing OUT (mushroom the end) to hold the washer in place.
