Transmission Problem?

I have a 1990 F150 XLT auto with overdrive. The problem is that when in over drive it seems to want to shift early and down shift too late. When this happens his goes into overdrive rough. I took it to a tranny shop last year and the guys said that was normal for Ford trucks. When I drive in just "D" and not "OD" it shifts smoothly in all gears. When I get up around 55 on long roads I shift up inot "OD" and it goes smoothly. I don't think it is the actual overdrive gear but some type of syncro problem. If you have any thoughts on this please let me know.

From what trucks i have been around of those years it is typical.

All of the ford trucks in my family do that, it is totally normal, it does it depending on if you are accelerating or decelerating when it up shifts or down shifts.
