You also don’t want the tail to be wagging the dog.

I have had 2 campers in the past that I towed with an F-150. They were light and the truck did fine. I switched to an RV for some years and just went back to a truck and trailer. This time I got an F-250. I just hit the scales and my 26' trailer is sitting at 6,900 lbs with a GVWR of 7,800 lbs. The 6.2l v8 pulls it very well and the weight and capacity of the F-250 handles the trailer very well. I will never go back to towing a camper with a half-ton. Not that it was bad, just that the 3/4 ton is that much better.

Oh, and if you really want towing power w/o stepping up to a diesel, look at the 7.3l v8. Even more power than the 6.2l I have so I imagine it is a real beast as far as gassers go.

As for my weights, I currently have 1,997 lbs of cargo and passengers in my truck and I can add another 1,840 lbs if I need to before hitting the 10,000 lb GVWR. Can't do that with a half ton. . I will be adding a 200 lb fiberglass cap soon and will be building out a truck cap camper in the truck bed. So I will be adding more weight but should still stay well within all my ratings.

I am in your same position. Was going to buy the truck this year until the supply chain got jacked up. Will likely buy in 2023 model year. Two friends started with similar trailers and 1/2 ton trucks. Both said the trucks would tow their trailer but not well. Biggest issues were stopping, feeling somewhat blown around by passing semi trucks and pulling in mountains. Both purchased well set up 3/4 tons (Rams, not Fords) and said all is better now. They both strongly recommend against the 1/2 tons.

My trailer will max out under 10K loaded and i will have gear in the bed. I decided to go with an F350 with 11,300 GVWR, 7.3L gas with 4.30 gears. No matter what i do, I will have enough truck. Doesn't cost a lot more but won't risk buying another truck in 2 years then getting fleeced. My life experience is that if I cut corners or go cheaper, i almost always regret it. Do thorough research, think about all of the options/issues/possibilities them make your move and don't second guess yourself. Buy once, cry once.

I towed a 34 foot Jayco just about 8800 pounds loaded for camping with my 2016 F150 3.5 Eco - Great Truck - Loved everything about it except it was just too little truck for that sized camper. I bit the bullet and upgraded to a 250 6.2 gas and it was like night an day! Took a pretty big financial hit nut felt much better towing. The upside is I was jut able to trade the 250 on a 350 7.3 and got more than I paid for the 250 when I bought it! Go for the bigger truck - you won't regret it...
