'89 Ranger Fuel Pump Buzzing
Trying to figure out some fuel system problems w/ my '89 Ranger (2.9L, manual trans., mileage ~142K, no major problems until now). Getting check engine light (after 5-10 minutes of driving) & code 41. Recently replaced ignition module (twice) and O2 sensor (once). Neither helped. Truck stopped soon after replacing TFI and took to the shop and had a mechanic troubleshoot, they had low pressure out of the fuel pump. Replaced fuel pump, truck ran great but still had code 41. After 5 months, fuel pump went out again. Truck would be driving along fine and cut out (die) as if ignition was turned off. I was able to restart immediately after dieing. This lasted about 3 weeks and frequency increased until pump completely went out. It's been about 3 months since last fuel pump replacement and cutting out/dieing sympoms are returning. I have noticed a loud buzzing/humming sounds coming from the fuel tank for about 10-20 seconds, then sound stops and then repeats buzzing/humming. Any suggestions?

Sounds like the fuel pump is working too hard. A clogged fuel filter or any other restriction in the fuel lines can cause this. I'm no expert but I think that code 41 (O-2 voltage signal always lean) means the O-2 is trying to correct for a rich condition. A good shop should be able to see how many amps the fuel pump is pulling & if its out of spec, find out why.
