I heard 51 chips for Superduty, but can't remember who told me.

Maybe a couple dozen. Certainly under 100.
If the shortage is just microprocessors, I agree but I have not heard any report on the shortage specify microprocessors or any type of device. Chips are used in a variety of components other than microprocessors. If the count included all surface mount components, I would expect the number to be higher.

I just assumed since all the attention has been on Renesas that this is all focused on semiconductors and their focus is on microprocessors and microcontrollers. The main challenge is that there are few few manufacturers of these items and they are very specialized, making it extremely difficult to substitute in an alternative.

Conversely, for the passive components like a resistor it's easy to swap in a part from a different source. These can still be called chips but I don't think there's any significant shortages due to the vast numbers of manufacturers. A switch from a Venkel to a Yageo can be made quickly without any physical validation or changes to the product.
