Alternator Problems

Hi all,

I’ve recently been having problems with the mountings for my alternator, no matter how many times I tighten it down or replace the bolts and tighten those down it keeps coming loose and making a high pitch screech when I let off the accelerator. I was wondering if anyone could help me identify why the alternator keeps coming loose and if anyone has any suggestions on how to remedy this problem?

Signed,
The Don

Hmmmmn, you might take the belt off and see if the alternator spins freely. Perhaps the front bearing is bad. Also, check the water pump. In 35 years I have never seen this happen.

Did you replace the lock washer? Make sure you are using the proper grade bolt (grade 5 or better). If the the bolt is to soft it will stretch and allow the alt to losen.
Also, I forget what the proper name is for the washer, but I call it a crab washer. It is a flat washer with tabs on the out side that are bent down. When tightened it will bite into the bolt and the mounting surface. Good luck, hope this helps.

Hi all

The belt is tight and the alternator spins freely just like its supposed to. Yes all the washers and bolts are where they are supposed to be and are as tight as I can get them, (but not stripped). I don’t think however that the washer is a lock washer as heep70 mentioned but since I know the alternator has been replaced along with the engine the bolts and all the washers involved are the original ones or dupes. Ill try a few more things but if anyone can think of anything else to do or try it would be appreciated.
