Threading Rocker Arm studs

Hey y'all, I have a 300 straight 6, with factory pressed in rocker arm studs. I noticed they are backing out and I am going to pull the head and tap the head, and get some threaded studs. This is my first time doing this, so what exactly do I need as far as tools? And what studs should I buy exactly? Also can I reuse the factory rocker arms and pivot ball and nut? Thank you everyone!

Here's a link to a thread about it. The screw in studs have a hex nut on the bottom, so the head has to be taken off and milled down flat and then the hole tapped to accept the screw in studs. They had several other ideas in this link, but don't forget about the bottom of the stud hole going through to the water jacket.

Yea I've seen that too, I'm hoping to do this work myself at home, and milling down the rocker arm boss doesn't seem like an option I can do myself, so I may look at drilling and pinning it.

Yes I saw. I think I'm actually going to drill and pin it instead. What size roll pins do you guys think work best? Should I drill all the way through the rocker arm studs and boss? Thanks!

Here's a kit you can buy. If you read at the bottom they tell you to drill all the way through. This kit is probably for a v8, so you would end up with extras on a six. Don't see why you couldn't buy your own 5/32 drill bit and 5/32 roll pins yourself and do it also.

What valve springs you running that it is pulling out the rocker studs?
I have not heard of stock springs doing this ...... wait I take that back I had a mid 60 Chevy with a 250 I sold to someone and when they went to adjust the valves, they were making a little noise but not bad at all, the studs started to pull out he said.
I know that motor was stock as I got it from the first owners who got it new and it was in a station wagon.

I believe they are stock springs. It's the original motor from 1981 and it just seems to be old and worn out, maybe over time they just slowly started pulling out, but now they are really loose.

In that thread in that link, or maybe it was another one I was looking at, he over-revved the engine and that's what caused it. I want to say this is a Smokey Yunick trick. When he started racing the small block chevy he was having this problem so he came up with the pinning idea. Then later on they came out with the screw in studs on all the high performance engines.

Yea I heard that too on a forum, that they over revved the engine and backed out the studs. I am going to put on a bigger intake with probably a 2bbl carb, so it will probably be revving higher in the future anyways, so the rocker studs definitely need to be addressed.
