I am a new Excursion owner, upgrading from the 2nd 2002 Ford F-150 Harley Davidson I have owned. I needed something larger to haul scouts, pull trailers, campers, etc. I just purchased a 2000 Ford Excursion Limited with the 7.3L and 4X4 with 33oK miles. I was crossing my fingers and hoped there were no underlying troubles I might uncover soon after the purchase. I am 3 weeks into it and enjoying sprucing it up and just fixing little odds and end that an older truck will have. Going to start slowly upgrading some things in the near future. There is an entire subsection, devoted to those units. Click on the "Forums" box at the top left ofyour screen. Scroll down to, "Super Duty/Heavy Duty Trucks. Click on that link, the the Excursion link. The folks that frequent that section are the experts and probably have dealt with anything you may encounter.
