Hello I will be letting go of my K3500 6.5 Detroit Diesel and will be on the lookout for a F250 or 350 - 7.3 or 6.0 and would like to have IDS up and running on my laptop. Any advice / direction is appreciated. Thanks!

never heard of it before.
we use Forscan for technical stuff, or torque pro for reading/clearing DTC's and monitoring sensors.
IDS is what Ford dealer tech's use for diagnostics, programming, etc.... for all Ford/Lincoln/Mercury vehicles 1996 to date, not just trucks. Works on some other models as well like Mazda and IIRC Jaguar.
Not seeing the benefits of IDS for one truck. It's right about 3500.00 to get started plus yearly fee. I just upgraded to the tablet toughbook at VCM3 and it was 5k.

When I bought mine back in 2013, I considered it an accessory purchase for my truck and my wife's 14 Escape. The VCMII and flight recorder together was right at $1,500 back then with a $700/yr software license.
Went around to local independent garages giving out business cards for Ford diagnostics and programming. Made all of my $$ back and then some.
Still use it from time to time now that Ford offers a 2 day license for $50. I just line up a few people that need it by appointment and make some pocket coin.
