High pressure oil pump failure

2004 F250. Just started with not starting within a short time but will start if I let it sit a little bit. I have a new mechanic that I'm not totally comfortable with. He says high pressure oil pump is failing and $2500 to replace. Does diagnosis and price seem right? Also, my old mechanic considered oil change maintenance and would grease, check things etc as part of service. This fellow does exactly what you ask so it's there anything I should be asking him to check while he's already in there?

HPOP pretty well requires cab removal to replace. I did one with the cab on and never again. It was a 20 hour job at that time. I purchased the pump from Ford back then and it was around $1800.00 just for pump. I'm sure they have come down in price a little so $2500.00 to replace (including pump) is not that bad. It's labor intensive.

That's if he's getting the HPOP from Ford...which he's probably not. I would inquire about where that HPOP is coming from as it may be a refurbished unit that can be had for a couple hundred $$$...

HPOP replacement does NOT require cab removal. Its a 8-9 hour job, MAX. Only accept a Ford reman pump.

This is the HPOP you want if you plan to keep the truck. All the weak problems of the early HPOP have been corrected. It costs more then the Ford reman but you won't be installing the same failure prone pump. You should be good with the stock output pump.

Would need more info on why it's not building pressure. Air test is the best before just replacing the pump. Could be any number of seals in the HPO system. However the 03/04 pumps fail quite often so there's a good chance thats your issue.

HPOP is definitely not a cab removal job on a 6.0. You can see Ron get into the HPOP pretty quickly in this video. Granted this is an 05-07 but an 04 won't be much different.

Dealership technician here. Is this an early build 2004 (with 2003 engine), or mid to late build 2004 truck? Either way, HPOP replacement with either engine is NOT a cab off repair. If it's an early build 2004 (with 2003 engine), it's a lot more work, since the intake manifold needs to be removed, to access and replace the HPOP. If mid to late build, it is still very tight but HPOP replacement is achievable without removing the intake manifold, provided the mechanic doing the job is familiar with the "finesses" required when it comes to removing and installing the HPOP cover. Either way, $2500 definitely sounds about right. Take into consideration the age of the truck, and running into seized fasteners and components and I'd say that is very reasonable.

He tested it and said no leaks which means pump is starting to fail.

Not sure if early or late. Glad to know the price is reasonable.

Assuming you are referring to checking and verifying no high pressure oil system leaks, I'm inclined to agree with his diagnosis. Those early '03/'04 swash plate style HPOPs were very prone to failure once they get some mileage on them.
