By 1985, most half tons (with a 9" diff) had either 3.00 or 3.55 gears. From 1983 on, most of them had the 8.8 diff with either 3.08 or 3.55 gears, but the 9" was still used in some applications.
Does this truck have a 302 with an NP435 4spd? For some reason they always had 9" rear ends, right up until 1986.
Do you have stock size tires and a tach? if yes, what RPM's are you running at 60mph? I would assume it would have 3.00 gears, but maybe lower if the truck has a towing or plowing package, maybe.

You should be able to see the outline on the door jamb driver's side, unless they took it off. If you can find it, I would carefully scrape the paint off. Lots of info on there if you can reveal it.
