Tire question...

I admit up front that I am not a tire expert... <grin>

I have a 2018 F-350 (6.7 CCSB 4x4) with stock 18 inch wheels running LT275/70/R18 tires and I regularly tow my 40 foot 13,500 pound 5th wheel trailer. All is good - no issues. I am about to need new tires and I was considering going with LT295/70/R18 on the same stock wheels.

So I have a couple of questions...
  1. Will LT295/70R/18 fit with no issues on stock F-350 with stock 18 inch wheels?
  2. What are the downsides to this tire size change?
  3. Any of you guys done this on 2017 or newer Super Duty?
My motivations are: a little better off-road traction and more load capacity (4000 vs 3620).

I have compared the tire sizes using a web tool and the differences are very small.... Thanks for your advice and help in advance.

You can correct the speedometer using forescan or have the dealer recalibrate for the 20" OEM sized tire which is about the same size as the 295/70/18

Tire will fit no issues, alot of guys are putting 35" tires on stock trucks without any rubbing

The taller tires will make it seem like the gears are taller but your diesel has plenty of torque/power to make up for the slight loss of performance.

The truck will look better with the larger tires. I'd do it to mine in a heartbeat but I barely clear the garage door now with 33" tires and I'd like to leave a little room for error.

I wanted to do the same size tires, they were on national back order, this was last december.
I ended up with then next size down LT 285/65 18E at National tire, about $1,200.00 my
2018 fits inside a 7 ft garage door.

I run LT295/65R20 tires. Which are 35.1" tall or about 3/4" taller than the 18" tires you are considering.
I have no problem with them. On stock wheels or on my 20x9" 0 offset wheels.

The load capacity increase shouldn't matter unless you plan to exceed your rear GAWR. I believe that is something like 7230lb.

Yeah that size availability in particular is one of the bonuses to running the 18s. Just have them flash the computer to the stock 20 size.

The 295 width works fine, sits inside the edge of the fender almost flush. I ran the 295/65/20 on my last truck.

I have been looking at the 285/75R18. They're just shy of 35 inches, but have the load capacity.

Maybe he wants to run less psi and have the same rating? Maybe he plans to cut through some off canter stuff and put more pressure on one tire? Maybe he wants to push the gawr to the limit and wants some safety capacity.

If I were to build a srw truck for a camper rig it would have these tires and some heavy duty rims.

Maybe, all good points.

I really appreciate everyone's input.

Yeah, as far as the increased load capacity - we are considering upgrading the camper and if I do it - I will be right at my GAWR limit so I would like some "head room" there at least on the tires....

So any ideas what the weight rating is for the stock 18 inch wheels?

Regards!

^^That's (3590) what I've seen listed for all the 18" and 20" SRW stock wheels.

You know you already have a slightly taller than stock tire on there, oem 18's are 275/65R18, so the 275/70R18 is just a tad taller.

Just another factor to keep in mind.

I've started following some of these tire threads because when the OEM 275/65R18s on this truck (that I don't have yet) wear out I'd like to replace them with a slightly taller 275/70R18. The aim is to get a slightly better ride and maybe a slight MPG gain. So tell me, is the ride better?

If you do the math, the same number of rotations will go 30 miles with 275/70R18s as opposed to 29 miles with 275/65R18s. So with a 34 gallon tank, does that give me a free gallon of gas per fill up?

On my 2012, with the original 17" wheels and stock tires, the speedo was slow by 3%, meaning on a 100K engine warranty, they were only actually giving 97K worth due to the speedo error.
Anyway, a speedo accuracy check should be performed before adjusting the ecm for the tire size, or considering the accuracy of any fuel economy calculations.
