So my truck has done this a time or two over the last several months, but lately it’s become much more frequent. One minute it runs perfectly fine, then it will start running rough - low idle, running rich, and loss of power. It may run like that for a few seconds or 20 minutes. I have checked the engine codes a few times and have got codes 172 and 512. I will say the truck is probably due for a tune up, which I plan to do, but I don’t think the problem is a plug wire or a dist cap the way it comes and goes away. What would cause it to run like that intermittently?
miles? usually a crack in manifold, and very slowly gets worse over time, how old is 02 sensor, it could be time to change or its saying you have vacuum leak somewhere.
149,000 miles. she’s definitely got the exhaust leak on the passenger side, but it’s had it ever since I got it and always ran fine. I thought about a vacuum leak, but that wouldn’t seem to explain the intermittent running good and bad. I do plan to change the O2 sensor soon as well
if you don't fix the exhaust leak, two things are going to happen. you're going to burn a valve, and you're going to just keep eating oxygen sensors.
is it really that big of a issue? seems like every 460 out there has an exhaust leak, so you’d think more people would have problems like me. do you think it’s what’s causing the sporadic run rough?
your crack has gotten worse over time, some people dont mind running like crap, most are the 'farm truck' frame of mind, and it'll be fine, 1 vacuum leak I had was green EGR vacuum line, and it was the length of the line(3/4" long) and it would take heat to make it worse, winter time 'meh...too damn cold to mess with...summer holy cow its hot...got to pick one to get it fixed, or (note to self-stop being a little b i )and fix it.
Gotta say my 94 F250 460 has had a passenger side exhaust leak for 16 years when it starts. It's the heat riser, goes away as soon as it opens. The truck runs great. I live in CA and the only time it failed CA smog was due to a bad plug wire. Trying to remove the nuts that hold the exhaust pipe to the manifold is guaranteed to result in broken studs and having to pull the manifold to repair and that's not my idea of fun. I guess I too have a farm truck mentality, but I'll let her leak a little.
That all depends on you. If you want to actually fix the problem, and do it right? Yes.
man, you’re killin me here. not trying to be obstinate, but it’s hard to believe the common exhaust leak can be the only thing that causes it to run like that. do the manifolds usually crack or warp? I’ve heard they don’t use gaskets on them

I’m not worried about passing emissions or a little tick, but running like it is, is a problem lol. The almost certainty of broken exhaust studs is exactly what I fear

On my 94 460, had bad plugs. You would be surprised how much a new set of plugs, wires, cap and rotor improve the motor. Assuming that's your issue.
