Changing the oil on my 92 Gran Marquis (4.6L & AOD) and noticed the transmission was covered with oil. After test driving it I checked the trannie oil (idling in park) and found it was about three inches over full. Checked it again this morning after driving to work (20 miles) and it was over 3 inches above full and foamy. Apparently when the quick lube place changed the engine oil and checked all fluid levels three thousand miles ago they way over filled it (last time I checked it was before a long trip and it was right on in the normal range). Its currently in the shop getting the pan dropped and a new filter put in it. They thought it was losing oil throught the breather. It was running fine but what damage could I have caused driving it 3K miles that over full?
With it foamy it won't circulate very good. You may have avoided damage since it apparently seemed to shift fine. The only thing to worry about is heat. If it wasn't circulating sufficiently, it may have overheated at one time or another.
I would have a look for shavings in the bottom of the pan. At worst, it could shortened the life of the clutches/bands and possibly the pump.
They called me back, said the filter had a lot of crap in it but nothing extreme for a transmission with 109K miles on it (never had the pan dropped before had been flushed at 40K and 80K miles). Oil appeared normal color with no evidence of being burnt. Must have dodged a bullet. As long it was only leaking out the breather and not a blown seal or gasket.
It may be good then. Just for reference, my AOD has over 150K on it. The pan and filter is always clean when I drop it. I have never had shavings in it but it may just be a freak of the bunch. BTW; the first time it had a fluid change was after 80K+ miles.
My AOD took a dump right around 100K mi. I picked up the truck in poor shape (it was free) at ~97K mi...looked like it had never been changed so I knew it was going to die. Sure enough it did.
I change fluid every 15K mi or so...rarely swap the filter. It's just a screen that keeps the metal filings out out the valve body. I have a B&M pan with a drain plug so fulid changes are a snap.
