I have an 1988 F250 5.8l with rotted smog lines, so figured I'd remove everything. Per post on here and other forums, everyone said to get the A/P idler from Ford (Part# M-8604-A50) and a Dorman idler pulley (Part# 419-644). No need to change belts with this configuration...so they said. Well now the serpentine belt is way short to the point it still doesn't go on even with the tensioner fully disengaged.
Has anyone else done this? Did you have to change belts and if so what size?
I have a 96 with the 5.8 and I just eliminated the idler and got a shorter belt and also eliminated the whole smog pump. Not sure if it's the same as your truck. There's a pic somewhere on the net of the new belt routing.
The only difference is mines a 1994, yours is 1988.
If the doorman pulley, 5.2", is that the same size as the Air Pump pulley?
Maybe wrong pulley in package.
Did the bracket come with a pulley? Is it smaller?
That is usually what happens, take off air pump, and install bracket that comes with a smaller pulley, now you need a smaller belt.
Did you put a brand new tensioner on?
Did you get a new belt, stock for what the truck should have?
Is the belt routed correctly?
If the only thing that has changed is the Air Pump pulley, and your belt is too tight, then the pulley is too big for the belt size you are running.
