I think I need to change my oil cooler this summer. Riff raff is out of stock of the motor craft one. The dorman is cheaper yet at Amazon. Is there any reason I shouldn't just use the dorman?
Unfortunately just about everything Dorman makes is less than quality. I haven't ever risked it on an oil cooler but I have tried other parts over the years just to be let down. I am actually waiting on a cooler from our local dealer and they said the are on backorder until the 30th, so I would assume Riffraff will get them back in about that time as well. Don't forget to get the OEM gaskets from them as well as the aftermarket are garbage.
Shoot, that's kind of been my experience with them too. Just stinks, the water pump is out in my truck right now, and I was really hoping to change them at the same time and switch to ELC all at once. Maybe I'll have to wait.
One should be careful with mew oil coolers. The OEM unit should be fine unless it has been dropped during repairs or there’s an indication of its failure other than the gaskets and o-rings. The small cooper/brass tubes in the cooler are “rolled” into each end to seal from coolant and oil. I bought a new one and upon inspection did not like the appearance of the small tubes at each end so I returned it, not worth having to do that job a second time so quick if it failed. I cleaned up my OEM unit, installed new gaskets and o-rings and all is good. Thought I had pics but can’t find them at the moment. If you’re creative you could make a test jig to see if there are leaks.
