About to pull the trigger on a 2000 XLT 4WD with tow package that my mechanic says this is a holy grail at $11K. He's been scoping out X's for me in the area. Previous owner put in a 2004 V10 with about 80K miles on it about 10K mi ago along with a 450 axle for pulling a camper that never happened. Engine was essentially rebuilt, high performance coils, new gaskets etc. Body in excellent shape, no rust, small dent R rear quarter, jimmy marks by driver's window and missing front passenger door handle. Its red - I think the red color that isnt made any more? It has under 150kmi total, and 10 -15kmi on the newer engine. Previous owner was rehabbing but unfortunately had some new medical issues that prevented him from busting his knuckles any more on it. Leather seats in front and steering wheel have torn up leather and need to be replaced, front passenger door handle missing, courtesy of thieves who took the radio. Said thieves cracked the dash which has been replaced but is (primer?) grey and needs to be painted. Shiny bumpers are going to be switched out with heavy duty Ranch Hand bumpers on my F250 and hoping my 20" wheels and larger tires will fit without need of lift kit (swap from the F250 if possible/needed). Plan to sell the F250 w the 6.0 (OOOoooohhhhh) to finance repairs and upgrades. I might come even as putting $5k into the X would be nearly over the top for what it needs or what I need.
Getting a brand new second X - awesome.
Getting rid of the 6.0 - priceless. (Apologies to those 6.0 owners who have done well with it).
It didnt happen yet cause I havent taken any pics. Getting there.....
(Will be changing my sig - in mid-Florida now, different truck (the green meanie rotted out from the mixture of battery acid and salt used on Maine roads) and in a 2005 F250 6.0.)
Welcome to the Ex club, sounds like you found a good one with minimal repairs, which you probably can do your self. Big plus is that it has an 04 engine which should prevent spark plug blowout. Good luck.
What exactly is this "tow package" that makes it the Holy Grail? And the "450" axle? Is that from an F-450 or are you saying that it was regeared to the better towing 4.30 or 4.56 gears (front and rear hopefully, or it isn't 4WD currently).
ALL EXs came from the factory with the rear receiver trailer hitch and the 7 and 4 pin trailer plugs. Does it have the larger towing mirrors?
Thanks for the welcome. Vinny - I can strip any thread that needs stripping or crack plastic like a pro. Minimal mechanic skills. Change the oil, filter... easy stuff only. Really easy stuff.
Re the rear axle, told its from a F450... will be looking at in detail either tomorrow or this weekend. No gearing change mentioned. The mirror are smaller than on my F250 SD....
The year of the donor F-450 will dictate which model axle it is and what options would be available to convert it to single rear wheel and possibly from 10 lug to 8 lug. I think that historically most F-450s came with 4.30 or 4.88 gears, and you need to verify that the front axle gears match the rear or very bad things will happen when shifted to 4X4.
If the mirrors are the small paddle style then the wagon wasn't fully optioned for towing chores.
Watch those "performance coils" as typically they are inferior to the stock Motorcraft or Denso COPs.
Looking forward to seeing some pictures.
Best of luck with yr EX
I’m in NY bur towed camper to Sebago Lake in Maine and Fla a few times.
I have a 2001 V-10 Limited 153k on it. Sold camper though. Still running great
