Help 96 timing belt issue

We had to remove the head on our '96' 2.3 engine. Once it was reassembled it started but won't climb into the upper rpms. The engine feels like the timing is not advancing. It idles but has a slight lope. Its possible that during reinstalling the timing belt that we were off but to our knowledge everything was on the money. I'm not that familiar with the distributorless ignition system. Could I be missing an adjustment? Anyone have a trouble-shooting idea to determine if the engine is receiving the correct timing.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum tkofkc. There seems to be a little doubt in your mind about the correct timing. At the top of this page you will find the third post is a "stickey" called "technical information". Check there to verify the procedure that you followed to install the timing belt. Also, did you drive the truck long enough for the computer to reset everything?

We we're so certain on the timing belt setting but we dissembled it to check it and it turned out that we had the wrong diamonds in alignment. It was amazing that it even started and was somewhat drivable.

Thanks for the follow up. All we needed was a better manual with bigger pictures.
