Squeaks!!!!

Has anybody solved the squeaking that occurs when the steering wheel is turned tight or when you shove the clutch pedal in? Or maybe my truck is the only one that does it?? It seems to be coming from the vertically mounted reinforcement under the dash

Are you talking about this support? There are 6 bolts to the firewall and 2 under the lower edge of the dash. Also 2 that connect to a piece that is welded in. Maybe that welded in piece is the vertical one you are referring to? You might take a rubber hose or stethoscope to the area and see if you can isolate the squeek. Might not hurt to make sure the bolts are torqued to spec. I have 3 similar 1966 trucks and have not noticed any squeeking from that area on any of them that I can recall. One of mine has no clutch pedal (automatic) but on that one the steering column bearing makes some noise. I plan on replacing that since I have it all torn down.

The clutch return spring under the dash that connects to that bracket - if there is one - can make a sort of noise as it extends against the force of the clutch pedal and as it relaxes back to it's resting state. The spring is often missing or never had one so take that with tongue in cheek.

My clutch spring always squeaks. Have tried several lubricants and alas it still squeaks. I just turn the music up louder!

I know a few guys that preserved their uncut dash (or leaving the original AM radio in place) and installed the new stereo in the glovebox. Modern sound, original looks, and easy to convert back if needed.

You might want to check the steering column bearings.

I get the same creak from my steering column as I do my clutch pedal. The steering column is more if you wiggled the wheel up & down, not when you turn it

Agreed, certainly an option. Fortunately I already had a hole in mine, but I would check out RetroSound. Head unit looks original with minimal cutting and radio comes with all the modern options while looking totally original.

I have a non-Ford that has that spring and from the factory there was a sponge pushed into the center of the spring.
I would guess to keep the noise down?
Could take a dish sponge cut it a little larger than the hole in the spring and force it in.
