I'm sorry, that's not correct. Modern EVs use much more sophisticated AC motors driven by an inverter that converts ~400v DC to AC to drive the motors. The Lightning uses permanent-magnet AC motors that couldn't run without these sophisticated inverters.
I was half right, the batteries are d/c although I thought the inverter chargers only converted the a/c input to charge the d/c batteries. Didn't know they converted it back for an a/c motor. Learned something new.
Alternating DC current came widely accepted about 2000/2008 In industrial power controls. The field strength around the machinery could be a problem back then. The scanners like Wally World has would go nuts ! I’m sure these vehicles have tremendous shielding !
30KW is a big generator with fuel to be lugging around!
How much fossil fuel needs to be hauled around to run the generator to charge the truck? California will love the idea of these generators, as they have all ready outlawed sales of new gas generators starting in 2026 I think. As well as lawn mowers, leaf blowers, trimmers, chain saws. I feel sorry for all the lawn maintenance commercial firms but mostly for the small crews of 3 or 4 workers. How many batteries will they need ? How will those be charged during the day? Now I do have a Milwaukee cordless saw and love it. But that was choice not mandate.
I'd rather have seen Ford build a hybrid F150 first, like the Maverick before an EV ! Of course many pushing for an all EV world probably see it as a side benefit that less people will be able to go camping in the desert and forests intruding upon and disturbing wildlife, and gosh forbid making tire tracks. They would be happy with no private ownership and everybody living in high rises. YMMV Though I do find it amusing how popular off roading er, I mean Overlanding has become with some of the younger folks while many of them probably scream about climate change at the same time. I have a 7.3 F350 on order for a truck camper, hope it gets here. (11/23/2021) I Will likely order a Maverick when next years book opens up. Here in the San Diego area thousands of people every weekend year round go to the desert or the Colorado river. Towing off road toys and boats. With plenty of 1/2 ton trucks towing. Round trips of 200-400 miles minimum. There are not any charging stations at these locations. Plus I'm sure like it will be in many places, charging in 100 degree plus weather should be fun. But for driving 40 miles a day to work and back, better than a Leaf.
