OE Plugs

Yo Bronco- ites!

Autolite makes several variety plugs; platimun, double plat.. resistor and the OE seems to be the resistor for $1.25 each.
Question? do I want to avoid any variety of plug here ? IS the expensive plug just that , expensive?

Just thinking out loud

The double platinums are what comes standard in the newer trucks. They seem to have a good spark and last a long time. I pulled the ones out of my 96 Windstar @ 116,000 miles and they were still fine, they could have just been regapped and put back in, but it is so hard to get to then, that I just replaced them. They were the original plugs.
sick with Motorcraft or Autolite, Bosch are junk. I had one that the platinum center electrode fell out and went right down the cylinder wall. I had to replace the engine because it was blowing oil everywhere.

My experience is quite different. Autolites are junk. Bosch have never failed me, Autolite single platinums have. Motorcraft is OE. Autolite is now made by the same folks who make the junk Fram oil filters.

I'll second lxman's post. The Bosch platinums left me cold....literally. Of the set of eight that I bought for my 92, three of them fouled within six months. And thats with a brand new 302. I even pulled codes thinking the truck was killing the plugs. Nothing wrong though.

yea. i have had bad experience with the bosch in ford and heard the same from many other people. I am running double platinum autolites in my mustang, but it was the only plug that they had 8 of in long reach when i was setting them up. seem good, but i would never pay that much for plugs again. I usually just used the resistor and replace them more often so you have an idea of how your engine is running and lasting. they are rather easy to replace on the ford trucks.

wow jimandmandy ! you sure have valid evidence regarding autolite. I have 50,000 on whatever plug was originally put in there, figured I'd do Autolite but I don't like the fact that the company had been passed around. I was thinking about the single patinum tip but now may just go for the resistor.
thanks for the input

I retired a set of original Motorcraft non-platinums on a 4.0 Ranger at over 80,000 miles. Yes they were shot, but it still passed emissions tests. Following the common mistake that Autolite and Motorcraft are the same, Autolite single platinums were installed. After about 40,000 miles the ground electrodes were almost completely gone. So, a twice as expensive plug that lasts half as long. They had to make a double platinum plug because of the poor metal alloy they use for ground electrodes. Of course they charge twice again as much money. No thanks.

I have heard that Bosch quality may be slipping. No problems for me yet. Just as junk Fram filters are everywhere, the same holds true for Autolite spark plugs. Fewer places sell Motorcraft, you just have to look. Autozone carries them.

I ran Bosch plugs in a VW Golf I had for 65,000, and have never seen a better performing plug. They don't make them for the I6, so I got Autolite platinum... and wasted the money. These plugs are by far the worst I've ever had! A friend told me to try Denzo plugs... any ideas?

Well German-engineered plugs in a German-engineered car. Hmmmm! I haven't put anything but Motorcraft or Champions in the Bronco except for that one time when the new 302 went into my 92. That was the last time I spent more on something "new and improved".

i switched to bosch 4 ground platinums when my aging engine was fouling everything else, I was very happy with having plugs that never seem to foul.
But after hearing lxman1's story of the electrode falling into engine and wreking it I am scared.
how often does that happen? Surely Bosch would warranty an engine failure of that nature if it did?

I tried those Splitfire plugs once at 6 bucks a pop and my F150 ran the same as with regular plugs. And the Splitfires seemed to wear out quicker. I'll just stick with regular old spark plugs, Champion, whatever. Same as with oil. Whatever.

ok now for a little something NOT new but definately improved. I saw this at a local fair, some guy was charging abour $8 per plug, but I went home and did it myself. Really helps if you have a drill press. I use Autolite standard plugs in my little 302, but before I put em in, I drill a 1/32" hole through the little tab, and then with the same bit, make a small indent into the end of the electrode. This concentrates the fire better than normal, so the plug burns hotter. I have been doing this for about 10 years now and I get great performance, raised my MPG about 2mpg's. and the plugs last about 50% longer. They seem to burn cleaner as well.
