Howdy all, just an update on my overheating issues- as some of you may know I have a ‘60 Mercury Monterey with a 460 that didn’t like hot summer days etc etc…
Anyway- I had a new, bigger electric fan installed and they also repositioned the radiator closer to the engine along with a new coolant sensor.
it’s running better than ever and cool as can be after this work.
Now I’m just debating on if I should change my oil weight next change
What oil weight are you currently running? On my 1977 F150 - 400 I am hoping to go to Rotella T4 - 15W40. Supposedly more Zinc if that matters. Some say it does.

Valvoline vr1 straight 40.
Might go to 10w 30 of the same brand
I agree. Get a nice fan shroud and make sure it's sealed well around the perimeter and it should cool that thing easy with a factory fan. I know you've got a different radiator and whatnot being that it's in a '60 Monterey, but I have a not-so-fancy 3-core Champion with a factory shroud out of a '75 F150 in my '78 Bronco and it keeps everything cool with a factory clutch-fan. Keeps everything funneled over the engine where it's needed.

Ill probably add one then. Like I said immediately above- he said I may not need it with the new elec fan but it’d obviously help if I felt it needed to be cooler
I understand the sentiment, but he comes highly recommended and has a galaxy with the same motor in it. He gave me the same set up he has.
And I should be more specific- He said I /may/ not need it with the new fan. But said it’d obviously improve cooling more if I felt I needed it*
You ALWAYS run a fan shroud where possible this ensures even cooling across the whole rad minimizes uneven expansion and contraction stresses across the core and maximizes cooling. Any tech that would NOT install or insists that shroud be installed where possible I hate to say is anything but highly recommended, unless it is for being a hack or not really having a clue. And the fact that he installed an electric fan and moved the rad BEFORE installing a shroud reinforces the hack without a clue point even further. Just cause someone is highly recommended does not mean they have half a clue what they are doing.
Think shroud is a good idea for the pure fact some day some point usually at the worst time snd hottest day the electric fan stops.
I would not rely on the electric fan as a fix.
An unshrouded fan is very inefficient as compared to a shrouded fan. First, as mentioned already, the shroud (sealed against the radiator) pulls the air being moved through the radiator only (and not from around it). Second, the efficiency of the fan is increased exponentially by causing the fan blades to move the air horizontally only and not radially off the tips of the blades. The shroud stops that radial action and forces the air to move horizontally only (though the radiator). My opinion is get a good, well fitting shroud and remove the electric (it's blocking air flow more than it's helping). I suspect you'll have better cooling than you're getting now. If not, add the pusher fan back on.
