Bought a 95 f250 5.8w 5speed with a bad motor. Sourced a 1996 5.8w from a f150 and the thing runs great except for the pings. The original 5.8 was the SD setup but the new 5.8 was MAF setup. When i installed it i used the SD harness. Motor runs good but has engine ping at higher rpm. I have replaced the usual suspect but it still pings. See list below.
My question is there something I'm using from the MAF system that's effecting the motor cause it's run on a SD system(TFI or distributor....) ? I swear it pings more at 8 degrees of trimming then at 10 degrees. Its driving me crazy!!
I replaced plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, injectors, and even replaced the bad capacitors on the ecm. I also have tested the EGR and its working correctly...
I would retard the timing more even to zero and test for ping. Ping happens on hard acceleration or pulling a load. If it still pings, I would try a higher octane gas. If it still pings, I would blame the timing chain.
I would check for a slipped balancer and or the wrong timing pointer. Remove the valve cover. If the left side is easier use cylinder number 6. Get the engine in split overlap with each valve open the same amount and then look at the timing marks. The engine should be at or very close to TDC. If not there's your problem.
