When to replace clutch?

This may sound like a ridiculous question to most of you. My 98 exp sport has 80K. I intend to keep this truck until for another 5 years, minimum. To prevent any damage to the tranny, what signs and symptoms should I be looking for? Or is this something that just happens - the clutch goes out and bam - new clutch?

clutchs ussually last about 90k miles, depending on the driver and driving conditons. Some thing to look for are if you hear any noises like radaling or like a grinding noise when the clutch is pressed in, that means your barings are bad and you need a new clutch, also if the clutch is catching high, its going, its kind of hard to tell, and if you only drive that one vehical thats standard shift it just seems normal to you, because the clutch gradually wears, and you probally wont know the differance. I've know people who had no idea the clutch was going until bam they were stuck on the side of the road could not go any were. i would not worrry about the tranny, i have a 92, it has 170k on it just put a new clutch in and its going strong so is the engine, good luck

When the clutch starts to go, you will first notice slipping (the engine revving without the vehicle going anywhere or going a lot more slowly than it should for those rpms). The clutch is comprised of a disk with pads on it similar to miniature brake pads in a starburst pattern, a plug to disengage and a fingerlike device to engage the little disks. It is usually the small pads or the throw out bearing (little plug) that goes out. When it is completely gone, its like being in neutral when you are actually in gear. I suggest getting all you can out of one. Dont replace it until you get some serious slippage and engine tach. If it doesn't slip, it probably doesn't need fixing. No danger to the tranny either.
