351 W grinding starter
I'm stuck in a tough spot right now.
I have a 82 F100 with a 351W and C6. It currently has a 164 tooth externally balanced flexplate (28 oz) i nstalled.
After researching various forums, most people said that there are two starters that will bolt to the motor. A 'short snout' with a 3/8 inch offset, and a 'long snout' with a 3/4 inch offset.
Every starter I try that's supposed to fit either doesn't engage the flexplate to turn the motor (short snout 3/8) or sticks in too far and makes grinding noises (long snout) when you crank it.
Me and the transmission shop are at our wits end.
What I don't know is which is the correct flexplate for a 77(or 78 not sure) 351W with a C6?
164 or 157? Currently the 164 isn't working with either long or short starter. But I read that the 157 is for manual transmissions.
The parts stores can't provide any useful guidance here because their systems can only look things up by year, make, and model. So far that hasn't worked.
I know there's a combination that works because it worked before the starter bolt stripped and ruined both the old starter and flexplate. But I can't seem to find it.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
So, you probably need the other 164 tooth flex plate.
- E4OD and C6 are the same flex plates.
- AOD and C4 are the same flex plates.
The differences is about 1/8" ring gear from starter, and about 1/2" of the depth that the torque converter sits into trans.
Where did your motor/trans combo come from?
What flex plate do you have?
I have a 351w on the stand with flex plate attached, and a starter on the ground, I'll take pictures of what I know works.
update: some early 351w with small case C4 had 157 tooth, different again.
