Bought this 351W, with T-18 4 speed, as a learning experience. At worst its a $100 hands on learning experience of stripping down an engine.
It was out of a 74 F250 that someone was swapping a Cummins into. The usual, was running when removed, stored inside.
At time of sale, had a hard time turning the crank, so it may be screwed, and the only reason I still bought it, other than for the experience I will gain is that it comes with a Holly 4 barrel. I currently have a 351M in my 77 F150 and will be doing either a rebuild or swap at some point. I am leaning towards swapping with a Windsor. So may have enough useable parts to make the venture worthwhile.
At the end of the day I learn best by hands on. Will spend the day tearing it apart Saturday. I thought it was Interesting that it had two dipsticks.
Interesting, he was actually selling it as a 351C so thats why I originally started looking at 351's. Was definitely not a Cleveland as was closer to a Windsor. I trust your judgement more than mine and will find the stamping and identify
No need do verify. It's an FE as others have pointed out. Nothing externally will be any help as to identifying the displacement. 74 F250 2wd could be either 360 or 390 (4x4 pan on yours though) - 4wd, if original WILL be a 360. The 4V carburetor COULD mean that the engine is not original and not a 360 but if that is a 360 it's lipstick on a pig.
Thanks, Cleatus, never any intention to verify that its an FE, as I said I trust their judgement over mine when it comes to this stuff. Was more looking for an identifier to the displacement which you discussed. He took it out of crew cab which I believe he said was 4x4.
Looking forward to getting greasy and learning about the inner workings. It most likely will not be of any monetary value but the experience will be invaluable to me.

Thanks for the input!
It's valuable... FE's aren't exactly as cheap as they used to be. The pan is worth 300 bucks.
I highly doubt that was the original 4x4 engine- note that it has two dipsticks. 2WD had the forward dipstick in the block. 4x4 is in the pan. Since it has both, it most likely started life in a 2WD and had the 4x4 pan added during a motor swap. And yes, save that pan- 4x4 are getting harder to find and expensive.
BTW, I could help you recoup some of your cost if you want to part with the alternator brackets. If so, PM me.

390 worth something, 360 not so much IMO. Put a (71) straight up timing set in the 351M and wake it up. Alum intake and that Holley (after a rebuild kit) and get ya some. You might of bought a 100 dollar training aid on "how to take a motor apart".
So definitely a turd, looks to have been stored outdoors for sometime. Rust in the manifold, valves, heads, and cylinders. Pretty sure there was mold on top of the pistons. But, all in all a great experience for me, was fun digging into it and gives me a better idea of what to look for with how my current engine is. What I scrapped paid me back 70$ and was able to keep the transmission, up to the the flywheel, holly carb, Alt and brackets (wyrm73 I sent you a pm) and the oil pan is in great shape so, if like indicated, its worth something I will clean it up and and see who needs it. It was a stock 360, nothing special. Now back to my actual project!
