That will never happen in a Super Duty. It would cut too much in to the Powerstroke profit margins

would it? If Ford did it I assume it would be a low volume 120k halo truck for bragging rights, not in the volume bread and butter work trucks.

In that case I could see it, but not a general use engine.

Of course I could be completely wrong and it turn out to be the 3.5 of the Super Duty and that would be awesome.

In the near-term...Yep. The stats on the 7.3 were purposely kept low for exactly this purpose. However, as emission laws get stricter, I've heard multiple times they will eventually drive diesels from the marketplace in a pickup truck application. They could be way out in front here, but I'd think a displacement in the 5.0-6.0 range with a twin turbo setup would be more than adequate. Time will tell.

There is a story I remember from my father in law about the v10.

He is a Ford mechanic and said he was in Michigan for some training, I don't remember what for, and got to talking to an engineer about the v10.

Engineer said they actually tried turboing a 6.8 and it out performed the diesel of the time in every way except mileage, and that was only marginally worse. They scrapped it though because the profit margin wasn't there like the diesel.

Now that could be completely untrue, or completely 100% accurate. Who knows. But the way the 3.5 runs and people say it feels like a diesel pulling, I'm sure a twin turbo v8 would kick ***

Yup for sure, especially when hooked to a big load. You will need about a 1/2” diameter fuel line to feed the beast. Seems no one remembers the sticker shock they got when they first hooked the 3.5 V6 Egoboost to a good load........went something like OMG, these things like gas when working.
Remember the old 534 Super Duty V8? 4MPG maybe on a good day. The old IH 549 V8? About the same. Yup, technology has improved a bunch, but I will lay long odds that big gassers will still like gas.......LOTS of gas.

The 7.3 has all the same turbo coatings on the surfaces, same as the 3.5. I wonder if they do turbo it to drop it in a raptor, super tremor or such. I would love to see a bolt on kit that just adds 150 HP. If the engine is already set up for it, that means reliable HP!

Diesel has more energy per volume than gas so physics still apply. Its not to say we can't make a gas engine more efficient than a diesel especially if we keep tightening emissions on diesel motors. At some point the curves will cross and forced induction gas motors may prevail. Sad in my opinion......

Yeah, it sounds great, and I’m sure would run incredibly well, but in the end it’s always about cost of fuel.
Big gas..towing under boost? Yikes...You couldn’t feed it with a garden hose.
Mustang? I could see it.

While diesels are current 1,050, it’s a 1,600 rpm number that tows and cruises effortlessly... at low to mid teen towing fuel numbers. That 1,050? It’s going to grow to 1,100 by 23. 1,200 by 26. And then electric by 30.
My guess is that electric is taking up the R&D budget at Ford, GM...everyone..., while fossils are slowly coming to an end.

You are correct about electric. I would love to see the "Last of the V8 interceptors" like in Mad Max. One last V8 to hang their hat on......

I think this will be some sort of specialty engine if they build it. Either in crate form or a special edition raptor style super duty. 1000hp stock would be attention grabbing and probably not that difficult, getting the drivetrain to hold up might be another story. I could also see them doing a hybrid electic 7.3 gas with the big inverter option in the bed. Would be a very nice camper puller if you arent scared of hybrid tech, which I'm not sure most SD buyers are ready for... After using this Sync infotainment sysyem I think Ford needs to invest heavily in their software development if they are going to compete with other advanced electric vehicles...

Those who hate electronics, better take care of what you currently own..

If a company isn’t currently working for the world that awaits in 5-10 years, then they are going to end up as fruit rotting on the vine.
Automakers must be at the forefront of electronic propulsion to compete with electronic vehicles currently breaking into the market, and we are now seeing the first releases.

Electric is the clear future. Oil is dying a slow, and now quickening death.
Everything else under the hood until then, is simply a bridge.
So, if this engine makes production, it will simply be a sales pitch for whatever its destine for, and a quick death.

If you think Fossil fuels are expensive now, just wait until electric budges in to the marketshare where automotive fuel becomes less produced and extremely expensive because of reduced demand.

Good luck on that. My biggest beef aginst FoMoCo has always been their electrics / electronics since like forever.
