Not a fun post. 9:45pm, people were still out walking dogs, and this guy is on my security camera standing on my neighbor's lawn with a sawzall in his hand waiting for people to pass so he could roll himself under my truck.. Of course I didn't get the plate on camera but lapd also made it clear if I had gotten the plate nobody was coming out or doing an apb or anything.
Anyway! I'm in California so I have all the restrictions imaginable, and I just want something good to replace it. Doesn't need to be fancy and I do not want it to rumble the ground, I just want it to sound stock plain.
Any suggestions or ideas would be great. Online prices range from 145 to 1500 and my welding muffler guy quoted 1400 for an aftermarket cat he can get. I have no idea what I'm doing on this one. I would 100% go stock but the part is discontinued.
they get cat and muffler? if they stole, cat alone, a new one wont make it rumble, check Junkyards, and get same year yours is, $1400, I'd find another muffler guy, just to put on cat? See what Communistfornia says you have to get, where you do, your emissions test, so you dont do it twice, for being charged for wrong one, or took to the cleaners over it, and still need one.
Thanks!
Yeah they just got the cat but I wanted to be clear in case suggestions for a whole new killer monster sounding exhaust system came up. I love how they sound but my truck doesn't need any more PR. Haha. I stick out like a sore thumb as it is.
So yes just the cat is gone. I'll take a look at the emissions sticker under my hood and start calling around.
I'm not sure, but if you have homeowners or renters insurance they may cover it and if you have comprehensive on you auto insurance it may cover it. Of course if either would cover it you have the deductible to consider. Worth a try. There are many anti theft kits available that you might consider when you get it repaired. This is a MAJOR problem in Houston and elsewhere as I understand. With the cost of the rare earth materials used to make them I doubt it the thefts will subside anytime soon. Repair shops here that have cars parked outside over night are getting hammered. Security cameras won't help after the fact. At least in Texas we have no emissions when a vehicle is over 25 years old. Also the crooks will usually return for your new one depending on your location and conditions.
.
I don't have renter's insurance and I'm checking with AAA but my friend got his side mirrors swiped twice and when he told AAA he got put in a whole other bracket because his car is desirable. I'll check, good idea. It's a huge thing here too, I think in March they did a special VIN engraving deterrent event but to me that's the same as after the fact; once it's gone you don't wait the four years for them to find it in a junkyard in Reno. You buy a new one and that's that.
I'm prepared for just really bad, because the worst was watching them do it on camera. I can't even imagine what I would've done if I'd caught them. Haha. Can't let myself think about that now!
That really sucks. Your looking at over 1200 for a cat here in California. I need one for my 1994 f250 460 and they are $$$. The other 49 states its 500
had the same problem with thieves. i just ran an extension cord out to my truck that accidentally had a bit of bare wire and it accidentally sat on my frame. long about 2 am i heard some load screaming and ran outside in time to catch the punk. cops told me to check my extension cord . i said i would get right on it, and i got free saws all.
Found this when I crawled under the Bronco I recently acquired. Glad to never need emissions things, but if a factory bronco 5.8L one with 150k miles would work for you, let me know
The worst part is now you will be a target. They will keep coming back and stealing the new one for more money. Back in Illinois my coworker got hit 3 times in our parking lot. 1st replacement was new, 2nd he got from a junkyard.

This is AWESOME! We used to do forktrucks, wire to coil, and then to seat, its shocking what it will do
