I believe you need to swap over your choke cap and hot air so it will work as it should.
There has been talk about this and dont think it was ever put to bed on what needs to be done.
I have not installed my "after market" carb not even taken it out of the box, my factory one I was able to get it working good, so I cant say what is under the non-wire choke cap.
I think I would mark the cap & choke body so I could line it back up if need be and pull the cap off and see what is inside.
If it has a spring and seams to be working I would put it back together and run it that way.
If not working or has no spring, install your cap and hot air tubes.

I installed a Dorman manual choke. It's been working okay, but I'm still fiddling with the cable rigging to get it working smoothly and reliably.
Now I have the heat tube just hanging out unconnected to anything, and the port the heat tube connects to near the choke cap is also open. Should I do something to plug these up? I want to leave the heat tube in-tact in case I decide to try and use it later.
Plug it off where it goes into the choke housing, With the engine running, it should be sucking air there. If that messes your idle up, take a short hose and hook the choke housing and route the other end of the hose to the nipple under the airlceaner mount where the other end of the heat tube hooked in. This will let it suck clean air instead of dirty air it's sucking in now if it's left open on the choke housing side.
