I have a stupid question that half an hour searching Google didn't answer. What's the hood on a 1999 E150 made from? I know the skin isn't steel but otherwise have no idea.

Thanks.
Well, I'm definitely no expert but as far as I know, all OEM hoods are made of metal and if I see one that's not, whether it's fiberglass, ABS, or carbon fiber, my 1st thoughts would be those are aftermarket. I think JWA said at one point he owned a body shop or something, maybe he'll answer your question.
All I could find out for sure was that newer models than mine had switched back to steel, not sure what year though.
What brought me to wonder is that I saw a photo of an E250 which had been in a terrible accident and the hood was ripped down the middle, and had no bends or dents in it. This morning I took a magnet to my hood and found out that it wasn't steel.
The E-Series all have hoods made from a composite material so they're definitely NOT steel or any other metal. They're easily replaced with a salvage yard part, the only real difference being whether your year had the Blue Oval logo in the hood or in the grill.
I'm not familiar with E-Series hoods as offered in the aftermarket---with them being almost a universal fit from 1992 up through at least 2013 there might not be much demand even from the most "frugal" of folks.
I had a deflector on my hood, kept coming loose, couldn't screw it on, the holes would erode, fell off when I'd pop the hood, gave up, wanted a steel hood to escape the insanity.
