I'm about to put a cab from a 1990 ford f250 on my 1988 f250. The firewall insulation is not a perfect match, can I go without it? What are the cons of going without insulation?
The insulation is there to keep heat out of the cab and to cut engine noise.
There are several after market sound deadening, heat barrier type coverings.
Dynamat is one brand, there are others. https://www.dynamat.com/
If you have the cab stripped down, good time to do the interior firewall etc...
Otherwise chew gum and talk to yourself more often while driving, or turn up the Radio.
Dont skimp out on the insulation. The turbo lives very close to the firewall and transfers heat into the sheetmetal easily. The insulation keeps the cab cool and the air conditioner happy. Also, IDI's are not known for being quiet engines. Loud trucks are fun for the first 30 minutes; after that, youll consider taking the honda civic next time.
The insulation shouldn't have really changed between an '88 and a '90. Is the new cab from a diesel truck? I would swap over the diesel insulation as its likely thicker and more sound absorbent as mentioned by others.
Also not sure why you want a straight piped IDI, way the hell too loud on a highway, most likely pisses off anyone you drive near and will make you go deaf. I understand lots of people like their loud trucks, but its also rather rude... A straight through muffler would help a lot to quiet it down, and not be restrictive at all. (quite honestly a non turbo truck doesn't need the flow of a straight pipes either buts that's another conversation...)
