Trading 6.7 for 7.3
#16
If you are already talking about bigger tires and coming from a diesel, get the 4.30s, really not much downside... with three overdrives on the 10 speed you are at 2k rpm at 75mph and have little to no noise, smooth as butter. People hear 4.30s and think its going to be screaming on the highway like an old 4 speed, its not, not at all.

I'm ready to dump my 2020 7.3 for a 6.7. I tow a 6000 lb TT, and am lucky to get 250 miles out of a tank. Pulling the big hills in the high country of NM and CO is a chore. At 70 mph it often downshifts to 3rd gear and is roaring at 5,000 rpm. It reminds me of towing with the V10, but at least the 7.3 will hold the requested speed. Very disappointed.
I don't ask a lot of it, but 70 mph seems like a reasonable speed, where the road conditions permit. But 8 mpg and constant shifting is wearing me down.
Unfortunately, nicely equipped 6.7 SDs are hard to find.

ya there’s no way that is correct. Goes against every single review I’ve seen on the 7.3. I mean my Tacoma with a v6 and 3.5l doesn’t even do that bad with a 5k trailer lol.

I'm actually going from a 6.2 to a 6.7. I have a 40' fifth wheel toyhauler. Gross around 25,000 with it. Power isn't the problem. It's mileage, and torque. If i wanna run 70 with it, i can. But i get between 4.3-4.7mpg with the truck, and yes, it will downshift and scream up a hill. Pulls it just fine though.
I've also pulled a 7x14 enclosed from MN to WY to go deer hunting. 4 guys in the truck, 4 wheeler in the trailer, and all of our gear, and still will get about 5.5-6.2 mpg pulling that.
These new gas motors have great power. Torque is a little short, on the bottom of the rpm range. Their torque is at higher RPM's. And that's why i'm going back to diesel. Between the torque curve, and mileage when pulling a trailer.
But don't get me wrong, i have loved my 6.2.... 108,000 on a 2015, and all i've ever done was service it every 3500 miles, put tires on, and a steering stablizer. Other than that, wash, service, detail, and drive it. Been a great motor/truck.

These new 7.3s somehow won't cut it yet my grandfather towed a 10k 5th wheel to every state except 2, and through every providence in Canada with a 95 Cummins.
That 95 was completely stock so it had all of 160hp and 400 tq going through a 3.54 axle.
Ever driven a stock 95 Cummins auto with a 3.54 axle? It can't even hardly get out of its own way.

That stock 95 Cummins was probably one of the best options at that time.
I thought about going with a gas truck but if you can afford the diesel option it makes traveling a lot more enjoyable. Diesels make mountains feel like they're not even there.

The 7.3 is an option but there are better options for doing the job during this time.

Problem is on this forum a lot of the time when a gas engine is brought up the diesel crowd swoops in, tells you that you've made horrible life decisions that you will regret, and you'll be lucky to get your trailer out of your driveway.
I think they all have their place, and it's your money, buy what you want.

You're right, there are other options, and they are better in some ways.

thats fine by me, the more people want diesels the cheaper gas ones are off the lot.
