Hi, new to the forum. Just purchased a 17 F-250 Super Duty Lariat. Had a 13 150 platinum with the built-in step in the tailgate. The 250 has a plastic cap over the top of the tailgate. My question is do all 250s come with the tailgate step or was that an option? Is there some way of knowing whether or not I have a tailgate step without pulling that cap off? I don’t want to bust it. Also I read something that says “ lockable removable tailgate with lift assist“. What is lift assist? Appreciate any info in advance.
It's a truck not a Christmas tree . Look at the picture I posted, see the outline of the step in the middle of the tailgate.
The assist is a strut thatgets attached to the side hinges on the tailgate. https://www.deezee.com/product/truck-tailgate-assist/
Also there is a clear difference in the weight of a tailgate with and without a step. The lift assist is a torsion or coil spring in the tailgate to help offset the added weight of the step in the tailgate to make closing it easier.
That wording, "lift assist" is strange. There is a tail gate damper that comes on Lariat and above, it slows the tailgate on opening, but provides no assist on lifting or closing. At least none that I can feel.
the only thing i can find on lift assist is you can close the tailgate easily with a couple of fingers, not sure how that is a feature. i dont have a damper on my lariat either. i think power tailgate might be an option too. thanks

These trucks definitely don't have an option that makes it that easy to shut the tailgate, on any trim. They do have the damper and power tailgate(push button) on certain trims. Maybe it requires the Lariat value package at a minimum, not sure.
its really so light i dont think i will even add a damper like i had on my steel 150 tailgate. as far as the step goes, I just throw a small step ladder in the back. the truck is so high anyway. thanks

I have never heard of lift assist as a factory option on a Super duty tail gate. After market has one that torsions on opening and the stored energy assists when closing. It's two rods that run the width of the gate. That's the only one I've seen. I wouldn't use it as you have to put 4 holes in the truck in bad spots. I have an opening damper that is a torsion right handed receiver connected to a hyd. strut behind the gate, great setup from Ford.
That cover comes off with you standing on top of the gate with both feet and pulling for all your worth. Then it's warped and a couple of tabs are broken about $120
On my ‘15 F250, with no step, the tailgate is heavy. My ‘18 F350, with the step, is much easier to close. I know it’s not lighter so there is definitely a assist mechanism.
