Question trans leak

I have had a minor but aggravating trans leak since I bought my truck new in 1998. I have taken it (98 4x4 4L/ 5sp auto) in at least five times beginning at 10K miles or so. Every time they claimed it was a bad pan gasket (5x ?). Its never been resolved (now at 95K), the leak is so minor that since the warranty ran out Ive just taken to having the trans serviced every 12-18 mos to be safe, Ive never even had to add fluid or had a spot larger than a quarter on the ground but I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this or can suggest a permanent cost effective fix.

It seems to run fine, its always seemed to have a little problem finding the right gear esp. if Im in highway traffic and have to slow sudddenly from 60 to coasting at 20 or 30 then when I hit the gas again it sometimes seems to engage roughly, otherwise runs great.

Thanks

The next time you have the trans. serviced, find an "old school" place to do it. Silicone sealer should be the correct answer for a leaky pan gasket. With the unavailability of an antique gasket, I was told several times by tranny shops to not even bother to hunt one down but to use silicone alone.

Have you had you trany "bands" checked or tightened; especially the intermediate?

As for the leak, are you sure it's from the pan and not trickling down and traveling from the shifter mechinism bushing or plug?

Thanks for the advice, they have told me every time it was the pan, but I have not personally verified this. I guess next time I'll take it to a trans specialist and get another opinion, its just about time for a servicing anyway..

Hi bcjim,

All things considered, be lucky that you haven't ended up w/ a puddle!
And...do some investagating for the Best trany shop!
I know that you would like to finally take care of this problem once-and-for-all!
