Front axleshaft seal

My truck (2000 F-350) has these plastic rings on the front axleshafts, just inboard of the steering knuckles, that are just hanging loosely around the axleshaft. Are those part of the hub seals that have come apart with age?

yup, that seal is toast. You'll need to replace that asap to keep the bearing its protecting from taking on grime and failing that much faster

Are these the ones?

Looks like the first one is for auto-lock hubs, and the second for regular hubs.

If that is on the AXLE side, rather than the hub side, it is NOT the seal. It is a dust/dirt/ mud retainer. Anything that gets inside the axle tube will stay there as long as it is working......LOL! Supposedly to keep debris out, but does a better job of keeping it in.. The actual seal is internal inside the axle tube, just outboard of the pumpkin and can only be changed internally. You have to pull the axles and the diff carrier in order to change them.

This is what I was about to say.

If this seal is between the joint and the axle (inboard), I wouldn't worry about it, maybe get in there with some cutters and clip it to remove it.

If this seal is between the joint and the bearing (outboard), then you need to get that replaced ASAP because it's letting stuff get into the bearing.

It LOOKS like it's the outboard side.

Its on the outer or hub side, you can see the nut of the ball joint up top, that nut tightens against the ear of the axle on a dana 60.

Yes. The wheel/tire is to the left, axle tube and diff are to the right.

Get a set of side cutters and nip them off, I've replaced them at least six times on my 2004 F350! Even the new "updated" ones rip after a year or so....and no Dana60 uses them anyways, they hold more dirt in the axle tube then they keep out. With them gone I can spray the garden hose in my cake tubes once a month and flush them out
