ford pass APP
ford pass APP
How does this app on my phone communicate with the truck? I use verizon as my cell provider, and have not turned on the free at&t service.
i ask because i figured at home it uses my wifi, but i was at the hospital the other day and unlocked and locked my truck at home some 80 miles away, so mom could get something out of truck. NO i do not give my mom my door code
thanks

The truck itself has a 4G sim card that is on AT&T cell service.
So, you go on your phone that has cell/wifi, open the Fordpass app, click unlock, and it goes through your cell/wifi connection, to Ford servers, then comes back to the truck via the cellular AT&T plan.
Yes, Ford pays AT&T monthly for the data connection.

I'm not sure how to best describe it. The truck has a 4g modem in it, the app and activation of Fordpass enable the mobile device to connect with the truck. That should be true anywhere there is cell service and irrelevant of service provider. So you could be in New York, and the truck in California, as long as the truck is in a location that has service, and your mobile device also has service, you should be able to use the Fordpass app functionality.
The Wifi hot spot is another feature of the Fordpass connect modem in the truck. They provide a 3 month/10gb trial if I remember correctly, that however requires a monthly plan to continue use after the trial period, and AT&T is the provider for that service. The Wifi hotspot is tied to your truck, so unrelated to your mobile provider. Although AT&T might offer a different rate plan for those who also have one of their mobile plans.

thank you both.
the OM was sort of vague on how it works.
i was offered a 3gb plan for 3 months free with att. but i dont want to open an account with att.
wifi in the truck i use my cell phone as a hotspot, its easy as its only 2 of us .if we need it, but i cant think of any time we have needed it in any of our vehicles.
its pretty good that ford covers the ford pass apps connection . not sure how much data it uses...cant be much

Not much coming in, but I bet it's a significant amount heading back out to Big Brother. I bet they aren't loosing any money on it.
You can use the free trial that came with the truck no strings attached, and without any real contract with AT&T. After it's activated it just stops working when you reach the time or GB usage limit. It goes quick.
As far as data usage from the app goes, its not much at all. I don't use the app on a regular basis, just open it from time time, check for recalls or other messages, occasionally use it if I think I may have forgot to lock the truck. Since Jan.1st, mobile data used was 8.09 MB.
They probably make a decent kickback from the insurance companies they send our data to as well.

Just wanted to throw this out there. Take a few minutes and read the entire agreement and privacy policy. You might be surprised on the extent of personal data Ford collects.
FWIW. If you ever decide to delete Ford pass, you have to delete the VIN from your Ford account and do a factory reset on your infotainment system. Only then will Ford stop tracking you and your vehicle.

i know they track all kinds of stuff,
i like it as i can lock or unlock and check tire pressure ...the huge plus for me is i can make my mom look at the window when the doors unlock at midnight
hey she moved in next door, so its my right to mess with her and dad OFTEN
i even have a tv remote that i can turn off their tv from my driveway .
but back to the big thing.
i find it useful right now. I may change that later, but it picked up my wifes edge and her car info , all the service and any recalls which i like
i already had a my ford owner account and used it ALOT.
i figure since i dont have alexa in the house, big brother can track me on the truck APP

The app ended up helping me this past week. My truck started missing when I was taking my daughter to school. No check engine light at that time. I got home, shut the truck off, then about an hour later had to run out. The check engine light was on when I started the truck. I checked the app and it told me that the light was on and that there was an issue with the coil pack on #5 cylinder. I called the dealer to set up and appointment and gave him the info from the app. Helped them troubleshoot the issue.
Even though my 2017 has access to my WiFi network here at home, I can't do jack with it from the FordPass app. Heck, half the time the stupid app loses the setup for my truck.
Something pretty badass I found for iPhone users, you can use Ford Pass and Siri to do all the functions of the app with your voice. You can also setup custom prompts with this. I named my truck Gojira, so issuing the command 'Awaken Gojira' starts the truck and responds to me with 'Awakening the beast!'.

I'm a Gamecock fan. 'Hey Google, F***' is responded with 'Clemson'
