These are essentially 'echo chambers' to make the intake quieter. That is their one and only function. They have the added benefit of robbing a couple of horses from your motor too.
I kind of thought they were there to quiet down the air intake. It's a truck not a Rolls Royce. They will be coming of or at least 1 will be taken off. It is blocking valuable space to mount something on fender well.
Unless you have a way to plug the holes, I wouldn't just take them off. I would invest in a new intake that doesn't have them (basically anything aftermarket). I don't think anyone makes that intake tube without the chambers.
You can make your own super ghetto cheap intake with 3" PVC plumbing pipe. Throw a rice boy cone filter on that bad boy and your stylin'. Must add 50hp minimum, with a fart can muffler its an even 75hp boost.
I made one for my 7.3 from a 4" 45 elbow (like 20 at napa) and a donaldson monster can filter from an excavator or something (20 from some filter place in arizona). It did breath easier....
