OK what now?

Had trouble w/ my 94 5.8 F-150 not being able to idle. Being without a code reader ( and not knowing how to use one) I replaced some parts: TPS sensor, IAC valve, plugs, dist. cap & rotor and thoroughly cleaned inside of throttle plate. Still nothing. Went outside today and pulled a vacuum line off of some gizmo on top, left of throttle plate (could it be the EGR valve assembly?)Anyway, started it up and it's running excellent right now but the "check engine " light is on. So what happens if I continue to drive it the way it is? What to do to get it to run correctly with this vacuum hose back on? And lastly, how do I shut the "check engine" light off?
Please bear with me...I'm a good parts changer but not so good at diagnosing problems. Thanks, Spunk

buy a haynes manual and it will tell you how to check it with a piece of wire or voltmeter then all you have to do is count the flashes
