IAC Interchange and Idling Problems

My 88 F250, 351w was idling poorly. It would go to a high idle and not kick down even after getting hot. I would come to a stop sign and it would be idling at about 2000 rpm. I suspected my IAC was bad. I had one off a 95 Mercury Tracer I replaced awhile ago which I knew was good. I took the old one off and compared the two, and the only difference I could see was the 351 had a bigger end on it. I put the 95 Tracer/Escort one on and it seemed to cure it so far, with no ill effects. I suspect all the IAC does is simply either open or close, with no in-between. I think my O2 sensor was compensating for the overrich mixture by idling high.

Anyway, I thought I'd pass this on for those who don't want to go buy a new one and can get one for $5.00 at a junk yard instead. I bet most Fords use the exact same IAC.

That's a good tip about the used ones. I cleaned my stocker too many times and it made me mad so I shelled out for a new one and never looked back. It was pretty costly for the new one.
