Hey all. Got a 1977 F150 400. Need to change the fuel pump. Anyone know what position the engine could be put in so
the lobe for the fuel pump is in a position to make installing the pump easier? Is it called an eccentric? Any other tips when changing it out?
Thanks

To tell you I have never worried where the lobe or eccentric was when installing a fuel pump on a motor.
What I would watch for is what side the pump arm was put on the lobe or eccentric.
Most arms are smooth on 1 side and that side goes to the lobe or eccentric.
If you find the lobe or eccentric is pushing on the pump arm just tap the motor over a little bit and try again but I have never had to do this.
Good luck

Yep, on a 400, the fuel pump attaches to the iron block and it's not dangerous to run the bolts in with the eccentric at any position. 385's and Windsor's are a different story. Their fuel pumps bolt into the aluminum timing covers. I definitely clock the eccentric when installing fuel pump on those engines.
X2 on just install it and with tension on the arm lets you know the arm is UNDER the eccentric cam. Put it in with the pump arm pointing down ish and then start the top bolt and run it 1/4 way in, then pull down on the pump body (if it has spring loaded tension you know the arm is under the cam) and start the bottom bolt. If it is to much to pull down on, then yes breaker bar or key turn over the motor. It is just a mini bump not a long try and start cycle.

TDC Exhaust on #1 for the 335 series engines, at this position there will be little to no tension on the pump arm and you will not be fighting the spring in the fuel pump to install it. It is pretty much impossible to put the 335 series pump arm on top of the eccentric and bolt the pump up.
