Has anyone had a problem with the 2003 Rangers leaking oil under 8,000 miles? Mine is in the shop for the 3rd time. The first two times they replaced the rear main seal. So, either that is not the problem, or the crank may have a defect. They are putting the dye in the system to try to pinpoint it now. So, if any of you have the 2003 with the regular 3.0L you might chech under it as a precaution.
It wouldn't be the first time that kind of thing happened. Ford may have known about the fault. There are many examples where the vehicles are processed with a known fault and are to be corrected at "the dealer level".
Yeah, I kind of figured that when it is taking two whole days to "determine if it is the oil pan or the rear seal" They know it is that rear seal, because they have already replaced it twice...They are just buying time until they have to replace the crank or the block. I hate to use the lemon law, but I bought a new truck and if they cannot fix it right this time, I intend to get another one.
When, in your opinion, enough time has passed with this present episode that you feel it is no loger a matter that you can deal with effectively, you must pass the torch to the legal department. Lemon laws are there for YOUR protection. Don't forget that you will take a bath selling that truck. So, take a deep breath and decide for yourself who is going to pay the piper.
There are no "known" concerns for oil leaks on these engines. I seriously doubt that 2 seals in a row would leak. It should be fairly obvious where it's coming from with the dye test. There is a concern with these engines in Tauruses where the oil filter leaks due to it loosens over time. The correct procedure to tighten the filters are snug and then 3/4 of a turn with a filter wrench. It might be something to have them look at on your truck as it could be running down the clock rail and dripping where it looks like it's the rear seal.
I know the laws are there to protesct me, but has anyone here ever gone through this procedure? Will they reimburse me for all of the money I have spent on the bed liner and other accesories? Will they pro-rate my warranty on a new truck, or will it start over? I will have them check the filter, thanks for the advice guys I do appreciate it.
So, it was the oil filter after all. The dye test revealed that the oil was running down the clock channel to the oil pan...all the way around the oil pan to the bell housing...dropping behind the dust sheild causing it to look like a rear main seal. Thanks for all the advice guys.
Sounds familiar. Had my 2002 Tremor for two weeks and oil was leaking all over my driveway. I took it back to the dealer and was told by the service department that there was a leak coming from the shield and that my truck needed parts. All of the sudden parts were not ordered and the next day they ran the dye test only to determine that the oil filter was loose. I was not a happy consumer when the dealer told me that vehicle had to be left over night and I had to obtain a rental car because I believe the service manager never looked at the vehicle when the truck was dropped off. The dye test usually only takes an hour or two to determine the problem. The dye test could have been started and diagnosed later to determine the actual problem.
The dealerships are the problem not the service technicians. The dealers are not giving them the latitude to diagnosis the problem the way they should be.
