I just bought a 98 explorer and had a new starter put on it, but it still doesn't want to start all the time, sometimes it starts just fine, other times when i turn the key it starts to turn over then just stops, then sometimes when i turn the key nothing happens at all, not even the clicking noise... It had an aftermarket alarm on it when i bought it, could that be malfunctioning and causing my problem? Any help is appreciated.
Certainly could be the aftermarket alarm. Also, make sure your battery cables are good. Sometimes the negative cable can be bad and still look fine. Check the cable its entire lengh and both connections for corrosion.
well i looked at the ground wires, and found a lot of corrosion, and so i cleaned the positive and the negative posts and all the ground connections, and it seems to be doing ok... hopefully thats all it was... thanks for all your help
Bad news, the problem is back, i thought i had it fixed and then it did it again, then i had a mechanic friend look at it and try and figure it out, and he couldnt figure it out, but thinks its the alarm or remote start since he checked everything else and couldnt find any problems, i will hopefully get this fixed soon. it has to be some wire somewhere because it is completely random and if you jiggle some wires it sometimes helps.
Sounds like you need to disconnect the starter interrupt part of your alarm. It may be easier to remove the whole system. Find the module and follow all the wires. The starter interrupt should attach to the wire coming from the ignition and going to the starter.
