For those of you that may have looked into this, the tire size on the new F-150 super cab XLT is brand new. I discovered this when I blew out a sidewall on a fairly good off road (washboard) section in Nevada at 500 miles. Tried to replace the original tires and nobody makes one.
I ended up replacing all five tires with Michelin 10 plys, costing about $1,000. Now I have tires that will take me where I need to go (chasing chukar) but found it interesting that the tire dealers had no clue.
Like the truck, but not the change in tire size for no apparent better reason. And no support after 500 miles.
Other than that, quite a decent step forward for Ford.
vgoetz, what type/size tire were you running. Brand? a 4x4 or 2 wheel drive? i wasnt aware of the new tire size introduction. is it the width that is new or the heighth ? Was it impractical to just install the factory spare and then buy a crappy "make do" spare in case you needed it before you got home? Just wondering why you bought Five brand new tires for a brand new truck. thanks.
Picked up my new 04 4X4 XLT S-Cab last week. One look at the stock tires (235 75 R17) was enough for me. Had 5 new Toyo's (265 70 R17) put on within the first 200 miles.
Not as of yesterday, but there are 2 companies that make 33's and 35's for 18inch. I am waiting for either BFG or GY MT/R's. I had the MT/R's 305 on my 2002 F150 on 17's.
The OEM tires were Haycock 235/75/17. (The new size that no one has!!!)
I am now running Michelin LTX A/S 265/70/17 a ten ply good for at least 60M Miles. A little stiffer ride at 40 lbs, but with a load the tires will take up to 80 lbs.
The sticker shock is large $190 a tire (four and a spare) you do the math.
Hankook appears to be suppling most of the 235/70-17 standard 2wd tires. There's not much information on these tires (even at the Hankook website). If you have them, please go to tirerack.com and rate them.
Michelin and Goodyear don't make 235/70-17 or 255/65-17 tires. I have contacted them asking WHEN they will have tires available. I'm interested in the Goodyear Fortera HL, the Michelin Cross Terrain, and the new Michelin HydroEdge.
I almost went with a 265/60-17 Cross Terrain since it's height is the same as the standard tires. However, it requires a 8.0 inch wheel. Our trucks come with 7.5 inch wheels.
Any feedback on the Hankook tires would be appreciated. I really don't trust them at this point.
