I bought a 6'5" x 13'9" trailer with intentions of restoring it into a nice utility trailer. The trailer came with an older axle and mobile home tire on it. I would like to change these out but everything is so confusing when trying to order the axles and hubs but I think I understand most of it. My problem is my axle is measuring 87" hub to hub and 74" spring to spring. Now looking at the measurements of axles that are offered I can get a 89/74 or I can get it custom made at 87/74. My question is will the 89/74 work or do I need to pay the extra money and have it custom made at 87/74.
I thought 88 was standard hub to hub, whatever. I went thru the same thing a year ago for my camper, was it ever confusing. It was 85/68.5 which ended up a standard size oddly.
Anyway, I think it will boil down to wheel offset. I'm assuming you are not going to use the mobile home type wheels, so you will be buying new wheels. I'd go with the 89/74 and get the correct offset wheel to make it fit correctly, which is likely the standard offset.
From my experience try to stick with standards as much as possible. It makes replacing parts in the future much easier. Usually when a trailer has a mobile home axle under it, somebody retrofitted it to the trailer in their backyard.
The question is...........is there room in the wheel well for an extra inch of tire and wheel on either side without contacting the fenders?
FYI. To the best of my knowledge the only offset on trailer wheels is zero. Mounting face in center. Least leverage on bearing and axle stub.
Do you mind the tire sticking out 1 more inch on each side? If so then you have answered you custom question.
mobile home axles are an odd duck. In fact it’s common to have them narrowed for general trailer use.
Whats wrong with using what you have? Get a proper spare and enjoy. They are heavy duty and the tires last forever. The spring mounts and shackles and perches are the same as standard trailer stuff.
