Rug 3spd/od
Can I simply tie any tranny to the stock six cylinder? Do I have to match a certain bolt pattern? Would the driveshaft have to be changed? Could a new 5-speed tied to a six be swapped into my truck?
Just throwing around some posibillities. I will drive the truck until the tranny finally pukes. ( The tranny howls loudly in OD, and has a little noise in the other three gears. I took the truck to a tranny shop and the mech. said some cross-shaft gear in the bottom end was going???? Anyhow, any input anyone might have would be appreciated into fixing or changing out this tranny.
Thanx in Advance,
Boomer
First thing is what's your application? If you spend a lot of time on the highway, then you want an OD tranny for better mileage. If you're offroading or towing, go with an NP435.
As far as bellhousing goes, any tranny that was mated to a 300, 302, or 351w will fit your 300.
When you switch trannies, things to watch out for are clutch cylinders (concentric vs. external), mechanical vs. hydraulic clutches, tranny crossmembers, driveshaft lengths, and bolting up to the transfer case. You didn't say whether the truck is a 4x4 or not.
Hope this helps a little.
